29 Ramadan: The Honoured People
The full Quranic verse of Surah al-Mujadilah 58:11:
O you who have believed, when you are told, “Space yourselves” in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, “Arise,” then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
Knowledgeable people (Scholars) are given a higher degree by Allah SWT
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported:
It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah! Who is the most honourable amongst mankind?” He (pbuh) said, “The most honourable of them is one who is the most pious of them.” They said, “We are not asking about this.” He said, “Then, the most honourable of men was Yusuf, the Prophet of Allah, the son of Allah’s Prophet, who was the son of the Prophet of Allah, who was the son of the Khalil of Allah (i.e., Ibrahim (pbuh)). They said, “We are not asking you about this.” He enquired, “Are you then asking me about the classes of the Arabs? The best of them in the Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance are the best of them in Islam, provided they comprehend the religious knowledge”.
(Bukhari and Muslim)
Verily, knowledge (especially Islamic knowledge) raises a person’s status above others, should they acquire it. Regardless of one’s lineage, if a person is young or old, or whether he or she is rich or poor; the status of a person is honoured for the knowledge he or she attained. Likewise, if a person is ignorant, then his or her status would not be honoured regardless if he or she is from a royal lineage or from a wealthy family.
Indeed, this is how Allah honours knowledge, and the one who acquires knowledge. It upholds the status of a person in society as well as in the eyes of Allah SWT, not wealth nor lineage.
